05/10/2007 - HARDWARE

I walk 3 to 4 miles a day, and people often hear me complain of pain in my ankle, my knee, my hip - my right leg. So, for all of you who just think I'm a big whiner, here's the latest x-ray of the hardware I have in my lower right leg following a severe motorcycle accident in 1993~! The hardware goes all the way up to the hip, but I don't have a photo of that one. And just so you know I'm not *really* just a big whiner, I'll throw in another picture of the x-ray! Please, click on the photo to enlarge it, and then buy my book from the handy link you'll see. I have medical bills. :)

05/10/2007 - H-H-H-H-HARDWARE

I was in a coma for some time and in Seattle's Harborview Medical Center. My injuries were life-threatening and I was told that I would likely never walk unassisted again. That's one reason why I *do* walk 3 to 4 miles a day. It's a long story but it's coming out in a future book. Meanwhile, click to enlarge the photo and buy the latest book. Let me know you bought it and I'll send you a link to a chapter from an upcoming book - a fiction piece but one that describes what it was like to recover from this.

03/23/2006 - LATEST INJURY IN A LONG STRING OF THEM

032306brokentoe.jpg
Jim W. Coleman proudly displays his latest injury, a broken "big toe" that he's been hobbling around on for two weeks. This, of course, is on the right side of his body, the same side that suffered skull trauma, broken ribs, compound tibia fracture, fibula fracture, femur fracture, rib fractures and collarbone fracture (1993); and also a near-severing of the wrist in 2005. There aren't many bones left to break on the right side but Coleman figures that at 41, life is half over - time to start breaking the left side. But not quite yet. There are still four more toes to break. Coleman graciously thanks the Kitsap Sun newspaper for buying his orthopaedic foot brace. And his glasses.

05/18/2005 - HAND X-RAY FROM ABOVE

Here is one of Jim's x-rays, shot from above the hand. One can clearly see where the external fixator was screwed into the bones of the hand.

05/17/2005 - EXTERNAL FIXATOR

An external fixator was installed on Jim's right arm to allow the crushed and broken bones to heal ... this was very uncomfortable and was on for months.

05/17/2005 - WOUND CLEANING

051706 oozing bandage.JPG

Jim W. Coleman had to have his bandages removed quite often to clean the injury site or risk severe infection.

05/06/2005 - JIM IN EMERGENCY ROOM

050605 jim in emergency room wrist.jpg
Jim W. Coleman in the emergency room at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Bremerton following a very serious wrist injury. Jim has been in so many emergency rooms over the years that he basically helped the check in nurse and just climbed into bed on his own, with very little prompting. It's pretty much second-nature by now.

05/06/2005 - SHATTERED WRIST INJURY

050605 broken s wrist.JPG
While cutting down a huge tree for a friend, Jim W. Coleman had a nasty accident with a chainsaw, one which could easily have severed the hand. The wrist bones were completely crushed and it was a long, painful road to recovery. The worse part? Dealing with Farmer's Insurance. While in the emergency room, Jim did have the presence of mind to snap this photo with his cell phone camera.

05/11/2005 - NO MODESTY

051105 no modesty.jpg
When you've been in the hospital as often as Jim W. Coleman has, you tend to lose your modesty. For Jim, it started back in 1993 and he's punched many cards at local hospitals ever since - between being hit by a car, burning himself, breaking bones, you name it. Here, he gets up for a stretch at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Bremerton. Photo edited so as not to offend. :) That's actually Mel Gibson's butt pasted in...

07/23/2003 - ACCIDENT PRONE

072703 Burned.JPG
Jim lies flat on his back after being released from the hospital to treat second and third-degree burns over his torso, hand and leg. Jim, while canning green beans, had a tragic accident with the canning pot. NEVER lift out jars by the lid; ALWAYS use a special lifter for the jars. Jim learned the hard way. Very, very painful.
