I opened a letter from Citibank on Monday to read that they are boosting the interest rate on my Citibank Mastercard from 6.7 percent to 14.99 percent! I phoned Citibank to remind them that I have excellent credit, I've never missed a payment and there has never been a problem with my account. I was told: "Mr. Coleman, this has no bearing on the status of your account. This is due to market conditions." Read more ...

Since election day, I've received no less than 800 emails and have been approached by a great many people, all of them wondering: "How are you handling this?" and "Are you okay, Jim?" One of them referred to me as "the staunchest Republican." That caught me off-guard and was a bit amusing as well - seeing how I strongly believe the fringe element of the so-called "religious right" is a liability to the Party, and that I voted yes on the "Death with Dignity" ballot proposition - bringing on scorn from some fellow Republicans.
So ... I'm finally ready to talk about the election of Barak Obama and what this staunch Republican thinks of it ...

Okay, so the left fizzles and frets about $150,000 worth of clothing for Sarah Palin (which is going to go to charity after the race) - and Obama plunks down $2M on a victory celebration?
Isn't he (or maybe that should be "He") the one who said: "And to my supporters who may be getting cocky I have two words for you - New Hampshire."

I carry a number of political signs in my truck and pull over whenever I see a group of politically-motivated people waving signs on the side of the road. Democrat or Republican, it doesn't matter - I can stand with them or on the opposite street corner.
Today, I spent hours waving signs in Port Orchard on the Safeway/Rite Aid intersection. And boy, let me tell you, that was quite the experience. Don't ever stand on a street corner with a political sign unless you have thick skin, and some real resolve.

Wow, the Emperor wears no clothes in the Democrat Party but now he's standing in the spotlight. Obama says that wearing a flag pin does not show patriotism but singling out a sector of the American public to pay more taxes and subsidize the whims of the Party does?

According to websites that track this type of thing, the Democrats have launched 72 charges (attacks) against Alaska Governor Sarah Palin since she was picked by John McCain to be the next Vice President of the United States. Like rabid dogs after a hunk of red meat, the Democrats are working tirelessly to pick this relative "newbie" apart and to dismember her limb by limb in the political arena.
But wait ... I thought this was the party of "change" - the party that welcomes Washington outsiders and encourages the young and "inexperienced" to get into the arena. Why pursue her so relentlessly, and run the risk of souring her for politics forever? Is this the party of change, or the party of destruction, bullying and intimidation? The Republicans correctly point out Obama's inexperience, but don't go after him nearly as doggedly as the Democrats hound down Palin.
Truth be told, they are afraid of this newcomer, and how she is energizing the Republican base. Hillary was never a real threat, but this woman may well be. They are pissing their pants, both out of fright and also in anticipation of tearing her asunder.

So, Hillary Clinton believes that the reason she did not win the nomination for the Democratic party is because ... she's a woman. She slammed into that "glass ceiling" with sufficient force to put 18 million cracks in it. From my perspective, that whole mindset is pre-nineties, and we don't need a leader who lives that far in the past. African Americans face significantly more discrimination, more stereotyping and more barriers than do today's women, but Barack made it. And if he hadn't I doubt he would have blamed it on race. I know why Hillary didn't win the nomination, and it has nothing to do with any "glass ceiling" ...

The final day of the Washington State Republican Convention was a sometimes boisterous and argumentative day as we tried to move as one body to adopt a party platform and review sixty-plus resolutions that had been submitted. From my perspective - there were two reasons we did not finish on time:

Blog author Jim W. Coleman and his new-found friend, Shannon, pose for a picture with Gov. Dino Rossi (Washington State). Dino was very accomodating when I told him that it would make my daughter's day to have a picture of us together. I fully support Dino in his re-election bid. Click below for larger picture, and to see Stephen Barrett together with Dino Rossi!

I wrote earlier on the blog that my favorite dignitary (politician) at the Convention is Rob McKenna. I have lived in Washington State since 1991 and I am convinced that so far as my interests are concerned, Rob McKenna has done more good for the State of Washington than anyone else. I was honored to have met him. The honor, he said, was all his - and he urged me to say hello to my daughters, and to encourage them as they mature into responsible adults. I hope they become as active politically as I've been all my life, and maybe they can do so with a bit more balance (wink :)
This is a live blog from the Washington State Republican Convention in Spokane, Washington. It has been a very moving, yet tense and occasionally disruptive, conference. Here are the events of the first half of the second day of the Convention:

I am not religious, nor am I always right.
That's been my political motto as long as I can remember. I may have Biblical values but it's a very divisive, misunderstood, and misinterpreted book - one with tremendous relevance today, in different chapters, to different people. I think my values are more dependent on common sense and a good moral compass than anything else. Murder is murder, theft is theft, a stick in the eye does not necessarily deserve the turning of a good cheek. I'm about sick of seeing countries, communities and families torn apart by religion. So I don't come at politics from that angle. There you go - one cool Republican, as my wife would say.
That said, I'm very proud to be a Kitsap County delegate to the Washington State Republican Convention. I'll be updating you on the convention happenings AS they happen...

Because so many of you asked if I was going to blog the Washington State Republican Convention, I think I'm going to try to actually blog it LIVE. I had hoped to webcam it, but I don't think that will be an option. But I should be able to give live updates. But for now, some stunning images. I've never been into Spokane (at least not past Carls Jr. off the freeway) so I was awestruck by what I saw here today before the convention kicked off. First, this photo of Mt. Rainier and Mt. St. Helens (in the distance) from the air. Click on the image to get a somewhat larger version. And enjoy the rest of the photos:

WOW! What a good convention! It opened with a youth choral group called "Stars and Stripes." They performed a 20-plus minute set that literally brought tears to my eyes. And in the end, I was elected a state delegate to the Washington State Republican Convention in Spokane, Washington later this spring. And Jan Angel voted for me three times! That's significant, to those of you who have commented that this is the "Anti-Jan Angel Blog." But let me correct you ...

I couldn't believe what I heard on the news tonight: In just a few months, the cost at the pump of Biodiesel has gone from $3.20 to more than $5 a gallon! And people are paying it! The steep increase is due mainly to demand. Why is there demand? BECAUSE WE ARE SHIPPING MOST OF IT TO EUROPE! Holy cow! I hope you tree-hugging, Global-Goring whackjobs are happy. I think it's funny on one hand - you are denying yourself to shrink your self-righteous, ego-inflated carbon footprint in the name of Howard Dean and Albert Gore and you are driving your hybrids and demanding that diesel consumers switch to biodiesel ... and your precious supply is being exported out from under you, driving YOUR cost up (virtually all goods and commodities are affected) ... and you are subsidizing European drivers!!! It's almost funny ... except that you'd think that in the current economic and political climate, we wouldn't be exporting such a valuable commodity. Must have something to do with the exchange rate and the shrinking dollar.
I attended the District 35 Republican Caucus today and was overwhelmed by the huge turnout. It literally was standing room only! I walked into this hoping to walk out as a delegate to the county convention and yes, I was voted in as delegate two of three. But more on that later in this post. First, I'll address the local issues we identified...

(Kitsap County Republican Caucus, Dist. 35, as experienced by 17 year old Erica Coleman:)
Period 4, US History, February 9th, 2008
Many people may wonder what a caucus is, and what the point of one may be. Today, February 9th, I learned that electing a president is much more complicating than checking a little box on a ballot. While that vote counts, it really depends on the electoral votes that brought forth from every state that determines who the president will be. At a caucus, you have the opportunity to discuss candidates from your preferred party, as well as issues that you think need to be addressed at the Washington State Convention.

As a very hard core and persistent conservative Republican, I'm becoming more and more disenfranchised with my party. Though I agree in large part with Bush's policy regarding what once was called the "War on Terror," I haven't been thoroughly enamored with his Presidency. Yes, even I think it's time for a change. And more and more, it's looking like change will come in the form of John McCain - *provided* he can beat Hillary and/or Obama.
I got my Washington State ballot and I just couldn't vote for John McCain. I was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, and I hold no high opinion of McCain. And lately, my feelings toward him have coalesced into a firm anger. I am fond of saying that I'm not religious, I'm not always right, and I'm *certainly* not part of the "religious right." Those people embarass me into sometimes not admitting my party affiliation. But I'm very conservative in the fiscal and security realm. John McCain does not show high water marks in either category, despite his proud boasting of being called "Sheriff McCain" when it comes to the pork barrel. And lets not forget the savings and loan scandal that invariably comes up when McCain comes to mind. Nor his intolerance. He claims he will "reach across the aisle" to the Democrats. He can't even do that with his own party.

Well that Bible-thumpin' good old boy, Mike Huckabee, managed to prevail in Iowa, to the surprise of few. There is something to be said for the evangelical base in America - stir them up, and they will make themselves known. These are the same evangelicals who don't want the state mucking around in their church business but who are all too eager to have the church muck around in the State's business. I've been a long time conservative voter, one who also is Christian, a believer. But I am not religious and definitely not part of the religious right. So-called 'born again' Christians in positions of leadership scare the hell out of me.

I have wanted an exercise bike for years and finally bought one today. Not being a "health nut" who subscribes to fitness magazines and follows industry trends, I tend of think of "NordicTrack" when I think of quality (but affordable) home equipment. I looked at several NordicTrack models today and picked one out, anxious to get it home and try it out. It wasn't until the gentlemen were loading it into my truck that I noticed, stamped in large letters across the outside of the box: MADE IN CHINA. Instantly, I lost all respect for NordicTrack and they, in turn, lost a customer.

OMG! I'm addressing letters for the American Cancer Society to our Relay sponsors and just listening to Senator Jim Webb deliver the Democratic Response to President Bush's State of the Union address. I forget what Sen. Webb said, but it was something corny enough to make me stop what I was doing to look at the television.
OMG! DOESN'T HE LOOK *JUST* LIKE BEAVIS, from "Beavis and Butthead?" I want to have the recognition of being the first to say it following his televised speech, of course, but man, the similarities are uncanny! I'm just waiting for him to start talking about his nads.
Did you see all the Iraqi celebrations on television following Saddam Hussein's sentence of death by hanging? They were ecstatic! They would kill him with their own hands, if they had the chance. Of course, we're only talking about the Shiites and the Kurds, but that's 85% of the country.
But, whoa! Here's an article from our ally, Saudi Arabia, talking about how Bush's "spreading of fear" is backfiring, and making all our lives miserable: Click here to read.
The only thing I fear is fear itself. And Nancy Pelosi. (Okay, Hillary and Gregoire, too. They should just get sex-change operations and turn into little Ted Kennedy's. I'll buy them their first drink.)

Wooohooooooooo! Remember the pollsters? Months ago, this man "had no chance" - just as he didn't while manacled to Albert Gore, inventer of all things we all hold dear. This night is getting exciting! Congrats to all who voted for Mr. Lieberman!
I'm doing something I look forward to doing every two years - taking tomorrow off and spending some quality time with my cat, some Miller Lite and my television - watching election returns. Of course, you know that this is going to be a DEMOCRATIC UPSET! It's a referendum against President Bush!!! You know, everything that has gone wrong in this country in the last six years has been ALL HIS DAMN FAULT!
