11/08/2008 - "THE STAUNCH REPUBLICAN" on OBAMA

Since election day, I've received no less than 800 emails and have been approached by a great many people, all of them wondering: "How are you handling this?" and "Are you okay, Jim?" One of them referred to me as "the staunchest Republican." That caught me off-guard and was a bit amusing as well - seeing how I strongly believe the fringe element of the so-called "religious right" is a liability to the Party, and that I voted yes on the "Death with Dignity" ballot proposition - bringing on scorn from some fellow Republicans.

So ... I'm finally ready to talk about the election of Barak Obama and what this staunch Republican thinks of it ...
Meet the crew of sign wavers who stand out on the corner of Bethel and Tremont in Port Orchard until nightfall, seven days a week. They are (from left to right): Sue, John, Adam, and Jim. We have plenty of signs and we invite you to stand with us! Oftentimes, we duck on over to Puerto Vallarta for a beer when we're done, and we always have a great time. In fact, this has become the highlight of my day, and I hope to see you join us for an hour or two some night after work.

10/21/2008 - POLITICAL SIGNS ON TREMONT

I invite you to come wave political signs with us on Tremont and Bethel in Port Orchard to support our Republican candidates. There's usually a group there from 3 to 6 p.m. on weekdays, and also on Saturdays in the morning and early afternoon. With the election only two weeks away, I'm trying to donate as much of my time as possible to stand out in the cold and get passersby excited. It's a lot of fun and great entertainment as well. You can't take shouted insults personally; instead, look at the funny side of it and it starts to look ... pretty pathetic. If one out of every ten who drove by shaking their head "no" would actually DO something ... like stand out on a corner, it might be a different race for the other side. Jan Angel was out there with us tonight, after spending nine hours "pushing a pencil on a budget." If nothing else, you get some good company and you get to witness a beautiful sunset. My rule: when the headlights come on, I'm outta there. :)

Today, I spent hours waving signs in Port Orchard on the Safeway/Rite Aid intersection. And boy, let me tell you, that was quite the experience. Don't ever stand on a street corner with a political sign unless you have thick skin, and some real resolve.

09/09/2008 - PALIN' BESIDE PALIN

According to websites that track this type of thing, the Democrats have launched 72 charges (attacks) against Alaska Governor Sarah Palin since she was picked by John McCain to be the next Vice President of the United States. Like rabid dogs after a hunk of red meat, the Democrats are working tirelessly to pick this relative "newbie" apart and to dismember her limb by limb in the political arena.

But wait ... I thought this was the party of "change" - the party that welcomes Washington outsiders and encourages the young and "inexperienced" to get into the arena. Why pursue her so relentlessly, and run the risk of souring her for politics forever? Is this the party of change, or the party of destruction, bullying and intimidation? The Republicans correctly point out Obama's inexperience, but don't go after him nearly as doggedly as the Democrats hound down Palin.

Truth be told, they are afraid of this newcomer, and how she is energizing the Republican base. Hillary was never a real threat, but this woman may well be. They are pissing their pants, both out of fright and also in anticipation of tearing her asunder.

06/08/08 - HILLARY AND THE GLASS CEILING

So, Hillary Clinton believes that the reason she did not win the nomination for the Democratic party is because ... she's a woman. She slammed into that "glass ceiling" with sufficient force to put 18 million cracks in it. From my perspective, that whole mindset is pre-nineties, and we don't need a leader who lives that far in the past. African Americans face significantly more discrimination, more stereotyping and more barriers than do today's women, but Barack made it. And if he hadn't I doubt he would have blamed it on race. I know why Hillary didn't win the nomination, and it has nothing to do with any "glass ceiling" ...
