I opened a letter from Citibank on Monday to read that they are boosting the interest rate on my Citibank Mastercard from 6.7 percent to 14.99 percent! I phoned Citibank to remind them that I have excellent credit, I've never missed a payment and there has never been a problem with my account. I was told: "Mr. Coleman, this has no bearing on the status of your account. This is due to market conditions." Read more ...

On the news this morning (KIRO TV 7, Seattle) I saw a story where they reported that Citibank customers all across the country are angry with this rate increase. A spokesperson from Citibank made this ridiculous statement regarding the interest rate increase: "We believe our products are competitive in the marketplace."

All things being equal, I would have to agree - that's why I have kept my Citibank card.

But things are not equal. CITIBANK RECEIVED A MASSIVE FEDERAL BAILOUT! Their competitors did not. And now Citibank is going BACK to the well to strip your pockets clean of anything they can get.

I think part of the problem is that Citibank does not understand simple mathematics. During the phone conversation I had with them, the overly-polite Citibank phone rep (who knows that her call is probably being monitored) assured me THREE TIMES that it was only a "modest six or seven percent increase."

You do the math: 14.99% - 6.7%. I think she rounded down a little. Meanwhile, her supervisors are rounding up, rounding up every precious dollar they can suck out of you, whether it be through your monthly credit card bill or through the taxation power of the Federal government.

One way or another, Citibank will get you in the end.

Since election day, I've received no less than 800 emails and have been approached by a great many people, all of them wondering: "How are you handling this?" and "Are you okay, Jim?" One of them referred to me as "the staunchest Republican." That caught me off-guard and was a bit amusing as well - seeing how I strongly believe the fringe element of the so-called "religious right" is a liability to the Party, and that I voted yes on the "Death with Dignity" ballot proposition - bringing on scorn from some fellow Republicans.

So ... I'm finally ready to talk about the election of Barak Obama and what this staunch Republican thinks of it ...

First, in case you think I've been drinking all this "Come together" Koolaid that's being poured from the president-elect, let me assure you that I realize it's much like how everyone came together to sing the national anthem on the Capital steps following Sept. 11 - it's a matter of political convenience and expediency.

That said, the fact of the matter is that this election is over and was a stunning example of how the American system really does work. People can bring change without resorting to civil unrest. We can control our destinies. We are fortunate enough to live in a great democracy that allows us to choose our leaders. By virtue of this not being a dictatorship, someone always loses. But lose we must in order to make this a more perfect union and to preserve the sanctity of our system. As my brother said so well: "Win with humility and lose with humility."

I do not agree with Obama on a great many important issues. Trust has to be earned and he's not yet earned mine (in fact, he's starting with somewhat of a deficit.) That said, he is my President. For eight years, I've railed against the "Bush haters." - those who blame everything on George W. Bush whether it was deserved or not. Now that the shoe is on the other foot, I will not become one of them but will, rather, continue to be a good American. I will always respect the office of the President, I will support my goverment and will also start working right now toward the election four years from now. If we're to win then, it will ALL hinge on what we do in the next week, the next month, the next year. We can let our hurt feelings and theological and ideological differences work to deepen the rift between our two parties or we can be gracious, respect the office of the President and move forward as a united nation.

Obama won, fair and square, with a mandate from Americans in all walks of life (along with a great deal of help from the national media), including evangelicals and some conservatives. In four years, we'll have another go at it. But people will have to be won over and that won't happen if we get petty, nasty and disrespectful.

In summary, Obama is now my President and I wish him great success. He hasn't taken the oath of office yet and hasn't really done anything in an official capacity yet, so I have no criticism. I will support him as best I can but will also enthusiastically oppose him where we differ in principle or conviction. I will be gracious and work across the aisle but will not ever compromise my deeply held (staunch!) convictions, morals and beliefs. Obama conducted most of his campaign from center left (as opposed to the far left). So long as he doesn't succumb to the siren song of a far-left Congress, he will likely be an effective and popular President.

The McCain/Palin ticket won a victory in Washington State today! Their visit took many by surprise ...

John McCain and Sarah Palin (as played by Jim W. Coleman and Charlotte W.) swept into a local health insurance work location and walked away with first place in the annual Halloween Costume contest. The two also were spotted in the offices of the Kitsap Sun newspaper, and the CornerStone Coffee Shop. Said Palin: "There is no way we could have lost this one." McCain followed that by saying: "Of the three Sarah Palins in the building today, this is the most genuine, the real McCoy."

"You betcha!" came the response from running mate Sarah Palin.

After shaking more than 150 hands, and urging people: "I would appreciate your vote without preconditions," McCain went trick-or-treating through the building, assuring the work force that "I'm not 'that one' who plans on spreading the wealth around. I'm just redistributing some of the candy!"

You can't take shouted insults personally; instead, look at the funny side of it and it starts to look ... pretty pathetic. If one out of every ten who drove by shaking their head "no" would actually DO something ... like stand out on a corner, it might be a different race for the other side. Jan Angel was out there with us tonight, after spending nine hours "pushing a pencil on a budget." If nothing else, you get some good company and you get to witness a beautiful sunset. My rule: when the headlights come on, I'm outta there. :)

I carry a number of political signs in my truck and pull over whenever I see a group of politically-motivated people waving signs on the side of the road. Democrat or Republican, it doesn't matter - I can stand with them or on the opposite street corner.

Today, I spent hours waving signs in Port Orchard on the Safeway/Rite Aid intersection. And boy, let me tell you, that was quite the experience. Don't ever stand on a street corner with a political sign unless you have thick skin, and some real resolve.

Lots of passersby honked and gave me the "thumbs-up" sign but there were some who felt they couldn't drive by without shaking their head, flashing the "thumbs down" sign, flipping the bird, or yelling obscenties out the window. "Republicans are Nazi pigs!" was one such shouted comment, as was "Dino Rossi can suck my dick!" Let me tell you - I encountered hundreds of Port Orchard Democrats in the space of two to three hours and it was not pretty. Fortunately, the honks drowned out the shouters, and there were many more "thumbs up" than flying fingers. I was, actually, surprised at the overall positive reaction. So much for the so-called "polls" ...

It's a real shame that the Democrats can't do better than shouted insults on a chicken-shit driveby. It's easy to press the accelerator and yell at someone has stood out in the weather for several hours. We are Americans, sharing the same freedoms and the same two-party system.

We have a two-party system for a reason. But don't tell that to Port Orchard democrats. Makes me happy - and proud - that I'm not one of them.

Kinda reminds me of the email I got from John, at work. One one line he says:
I don't take anyone seriously who supports the McCain/Palin ticket.

Then, in the next paragraph:
We can agree to disagree without being disagreeable.

Maybe that's the difference between someone like me and a party who thinks they are more American or somewhat superior: I do take very seriously people who support the Obama/Biden ticket. And I'm learning to duck when they throw things and have their little temper tantrums behind the wheel.

Wow, the Emperor wears no clothes in the Democrat Party but now he's standing in the spotlight. Obama says that wearing a flag pin does not show patriotism but singling out a sector of the American public to pay more taxes and subsidize the whims of the Party does?

If you are one, like me, who hopes to someday be a "wealthy American," make sure everyone of like mind reads this story. My goal is to live comfortably and provide for my family, not subsidize the likes of Joe Biden, Nobama, Hillary and all their cohorts.

Wealthy Americans subsidize our economy, our infrastructure, create and provide jobs. Siphoning more of their resources away into the bottomless chasm of government bureaucracy does not make that class more patriotic - all it does is makes them angry, angry enough to move their investments overseas and their dollars into accounts our Treasury can not touch.

Remember, to the Democrats, what's yours is everyone else's. And more and more, they're not just talking about your money.

According to websites that track this type of thing, the Democrats have launched 72 charges (attacks) against Alaska Governor Sarah Palin since she was picked by John McCain to be the next Vice President of the United States. Like rabid dogs after a hunk of red meat, the Democrats are working tirelessly to pick this relative "newbie" apart and to dismember her limb by limb in the political arena.

But wait ... I thought this was the party of "change" - the party that welcomes Washington outsiders and encourages the young and "inexperienced" to get into the arena. Why pursue her so relentlessly, and run the risk of souring her for politics forever? Is this the party of change, or the party of destruction, bullying and intimidation? The Republicans correctly point out Obama's inexperience, but don't go after him nearly as doggedly as the Democrats hound down Palin.

Truth be told, they are afraid of this newcomer, and how she is energizing the Republican base. Hillary was never a real threat, but this woman may well be. They are pissing their pants, both out of fright and also in anticipation of tearing her asunder.

So, Hillary Clinton believes that the reason she did not win the nomination for the Democratic party is because ... she's a woman. She slammed into that "glass ceiling" with sufficient force to put 18 million cracks in it. From my perspective, that whole mindset is pre-nineties, and we don't need a leader who lives that far in the past. African Americans face significantly more discrimination, more stereotyping and more barriers than do today's women, but Barack made it. And if he hadn't I doubt he would have blamed it on race. I know why Hillary didn't win the nomination, and it has nothing to do with any "glass ceiling" ...

I have talked to many many people and read hundreds of blogs on the subject of Hillary Clinton and I'm convinced that she lost in part because of her husband. We, as Americans, have short memories, but it seems everyone still remembers all the drama of the Clinton presidency. With rising gas and food prices, a housing "crisis," mounting credit problems and uncertainty in the stock market, the last thing we need is flippant drama in the White House. Bill, in his advancing years, is turning into a nasty caricature of himself, and that has dogged Hillary's campaign from the start. Additionally, Hillary is a militant advocate of her platform and beliefs. In the past eight years, many Americans have become suspect of "militant" approaches and personalities. And finally, as silly as this may sound, there is a lot of basis in the fact that Hillary sounds like every man's ex-wife. She doesn't talk to the American public, she screeches. Like a parakeet in a cage, she flaps around the podium, screeching and, possibly, doing more than just that. Toward the end, as the campaign became more desperate, Hillary reminded me more and more of Paris Hilton or Lindsey Lohan - out of touch. I am just thankful she didn't resort to a panty-flash or clothing malfunction in order to get more press--and I think I speak for us all on that one.

Put an intelligent, calm, rational woman in the race--one with no political baggage--and I suspect she would fare much better. Condoleeza Rice, for example, barring any surprise skeletons in the closet, could likely have gone all the way. I can name many more. And if Condi didn't win, she wouldn't come out blaming any "glass ceiling" or blaming her association with President Bush, or blaming it on her skin color.

Hillary gave it her best. Unfortunately, that wasn't good enough. And that's all that it ever was about.
