10/13/06 - BOB DYLAN CONCERT SETLIST

Bob Dylan played Seattle's Key Arena on Friday, October 13, 2006. We jotted down the title of each song in order. Here is the setlist, and three songs that we really wanted to hear but weren't played:

1) Maggie's Farm
2) She belongs to me
3) Lonesome Day
4) Positively Fourth Street
5) It's alright Ma (I'm only bleeding)
6) Just like a woman
7) Highway 61 Revisited
8) When the deal goes down
9) Tangled up in Blue
10) Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall
11) Watchin' the River Flow
12) Working Man Blues
13) Summer Days

ENCORES:
14) Thunder on the Mountain
15) All along the watchtower

And now, the three songs he didn't play - songs that we really really wanted to hear:

Not Dark Yet
Things have changed
The Highlands

At least you got to hear "Tangled up in Blue." That's long been a favorite of mine. Did he play the standard version or did he get creative with it?

Jerry, thanks for writing. Bob played a very "standard" version of this song, to use your words. I'm not aware of any other version, though there was an expanded version on his 3-CD bootleg set.

All in all, I was happy to see "Tangled Up in Blue" performed but was a bit disappointed - it seemed as if the band was just trying to get through it. The transitions between verses weren't very smooth and I kept finding myself expecting more - particularly a throbbing transition that the Indigo Girls did in their cover of the song. If you've not heard the Indigo Girls do "Tangled up in Blue" you owe it to yourself to get a copy of that. It's the most incredible performance of the song that I've ever heard. I have the live version of it here, as sung by the Indigo Girls.

Well, I guess I'm a fan of the older Bob, the one where he had a vocal 'range' even though it was a semi talkin kind of singing, and his voice wasn't drowned out by a band, and the worst acoustics in a venue that I have ever been to in my life. We had spectacular seats and we couldn't understand a word. I will never go to key arena again. What a shame, we were very dissapointed. I understand that Dylan may be tired of singing his old songs with the same feeling and vocal melodies that he did when they came out, and I love the semi talking singing style, but, I don't know, maybe it was the unbelievably bad acoustics. I thought about the concert later, how can you play and not know what your sound man is doing? It seemed he was just getting through it and getting out of town. I've seen him many times, and unfortunately this was the worst.
We need another concert hall, how about the symphony hall!!

We had seats in the top row at a 90 degree angle to the stage. I figured the sound was bad just because of where we were sitting. I did hear from someone on the floor who said the sound was very good. So I don't know.

I do know that when we saw Bob in 2003 at the Key Arena, the sound was incredible and the show was full of life. From where we were at the 2006 show (far from the stage) I never really saw Bob move.

I'm very grateful to have been able to see him again and I was able to understand the words and identify the songs, but having seen Roger Waters in the same venue the night before, there was a VERY noticeable difference in sound, lighting and stage performance.

I hope Bob is in good health. After this show, I was beginning to wonder. And yes, to echo you, it did seem to be a "get through it" kind of show. He had to play Portland the next night and maybe they were in a hurry to pack up and go. Who knows?
