When doing preliminary sketching and layout work for this piece, I really struggled with how best to portray this. I was fascinated by the smooth, rich features of Frankie's face but also the intricate patterns in her uniform. It would be a challenge to make those two dramatically different elements work together. If I did my usual stipling technique, this piece would end up taking hundreds of hours ... and that style might not even "work" in the end.
After spending a lot of back-and-forth time and going through numerous pencils and sketchpad sheets, I began to entertain the idea of blending my own technique with a "comic style" look. I became convinced that this was the right approach, particularly since Bobbie Draper is so bad-ass to begin with. I wanted to give her that "Super Hero" look while also layering in her femininity and beauty.
This one took me in new directions as I've never done "comic-type" artwork. It's just not my thing. Additionally, I was very generous with the colored ink and that, in itself, was quite a departure from my usual black-and-white work. I did find myself continuously reverting back to my very detailed style, particularly on her face.
Of the five "The Expanse" pieces I've done now, this one ended up taking twice as long as any of the others due to the complexities of her uniform and the time it took to draw and color each little piece.
My many thanks to @GrownupGeekGirl for letting me bounce ideas and early concepts off of her. :)
It was very challenging and I had a bit of a love-hate relationship with this work as it progressed throughout two months of continuous work but I'm fairly satisfied with it now that it's done. I hope you enjoy it.

Technical pens were the mainstay of the designer and illustrator's craft before the development of computer graphics. Now, many art enthusiasts are rediscovering the technical pen because its handiwork stands out almost magically against the bland precision of computer rendered graphics. My work has always been produced with the best technical pens and durable India inks available.
